Richard Gliech has taken on the role of Corresponding Secretary of the Burlington-Honfleur Sister City Committee, a Vermont-based group established this month to facilitate the formation of official cultural and economic exchanges between Burlington, Vermont’s most populous city, and Honfleur, Normandy. Honfleur is the French port city from which Samuel de Champlain historically set sail prior to his 1609 discovery of Lake Champlain. The committee formed following the 2009 Lake Champlain Quadricentennial celebration of de Champlain’s landmark discovery, during which former Mayor Bob Kiss of Burlington visited Honfleur to establish an official friendship between the two cities. As Corresponding Secretary, Richard will ensure effective bilingual communication between Burlington’s sister-city committee and the Honfleur Twinning Committee (Comité de jumelage de Honfleur).
